Freestyles: Heavy On the Style by Chuck Gonzalez Book Review

I was given his book for free, but let me tell you, I would have definitely bought this if I had known how good it is. This book is about a boy named Carlos who has a lisp. His family and class and teachers say he has a “lazy tongue”. Then he meets a girl named RJ who changes everything. Her dad is the coach of a bike stunt team for kids, and RJ is amazing at bike stunts. But everyone thinks Carlos is to girly and babyish when he shows up on his bike. On top of all that, Carlos’s dad is helping run the town talent show. Will Carlos make it to the bike stunt team and help the team win the talent show? That is for you to find out!

This book has amazing illustrations as well. Chuck Gonzalez, is the writer and illustrator, and he nails both parts. The illustrations are detailed and well done. And all the characters have nice backstories too.

Let’s talk about this book’s main character!

Carlos: Carlos is a young boy of Hispanic heritage, and he is also the main character of this story. He has a lisp, which makes him the odd one out. He is also into ‘girl things’ which makes him even more odd. Personally, I think it’s cool for him to not always care what other people think about him liking pink and stuff like that.

Thanks for reading! This book is a 9.0 on the Marianarchy Scale. I just wish there was a little bit more explaining in some parts. See you soon, and stay rebellious!
